“KDE was once again chosen to take part in Google Summer of Code (GSoC) as a mentoring organization. Thanks to Google’s generous funding and KDE’s mentors, we were able to work with 51 students over the summer, making KDE the biggest participant in GSoC. Choosing students for the program was hard, but the selection turned out well. The students coded in nearly all areas of KDE from Calligra and Rekonq to Amarok and KStars. Their projects turned out fantastic. As in previous years, we’re impressed with the talent and dedication of the students. All 51 students passed the mid-term evaluation and 47 were successful in the final evaluation. (One stopped GSoC after a successful mid-term evaluation because of a job.) Their work will be visible in upcoming releases.

As usual, KDE got more great applications for GSoC than we were able to fund. So we ran Season of KDE (SoK) again to welcome the remaining students into the KDE community, and to give them meaningful projects, mentoring, support and recognition. SoK is a program similar to GSoC where students get a certificate and limited-edition t-shirt for completing their project successfully. The response was overwhelming this year and we had to close applications after 100 submissions. Nearly everyone was matched up with a mentor and a project to work on. The students still have a few more days to work on their projects, and the results are already looking fantastic.

It makes me proud that KDE as a community is able and willing to teach newcomers to Free Software on such a large scale, while delivering high-quality results in terms of code produced and students mentored. What makes me even more proud is the overwhelming success of Season of KDE even without the GSoC monetary incentive, just because people want to work on something amazing.”

Kontact is the KDE PIM suite that includes email, contacts and appointments. Again, don’t expect to see many apparent differences when using the applications as most of the changes take the form of a switch to Anakondi for data storage. The mail component, Kmail is an example of this as it has been rechristened Kmail 2, although it looks almost identical to the previous version.

Of course, the the usual caveats about relying on a database rather than standard file formats have to be considered. On the one hand, it’s not quite clear what happens if you have to recover a broken system as you can’t simply peer inside a set of standard files. On the other, a unified approach looks set to pay off in the future, and it was always part of the over-arching plan for KDE4.

Increasingly, if you update contact or scheduling information in one application, that information will be updated in every KDE application, and this will include all of your synchronized devices and services. However, if you’re the type of user who prefers to use a suite of independent applications that utilize industry standard methods of storing their data, the KDE of the future isn’t going to be for you.

Photo manager, digKam is once again a core application, and it’s an example of an application that does have improvements that are visible on the surface. As for the application itself, it will probably continue to be divisive. On the one hand, it harks back to the KDE3 era in that it is a complicated application with loads of features. On the other hand, it’s at odds with the KDE4 aim to simplify user interfaces wherever possible. I’d challenge anyone who has not used it before to be able to figure it out at first glance, in contrast to the intuitive layout of F-Spot or Picasa. It’s a techy application application rather than a pure photo browser, and some people will want to see it stay that way.

File manager Dolphin is an application that has had its user interface simplified slightly and can now operate without a menu bar. Looking at the screenshots that demo a few different configurations, I have to say that I’m still not much of a fan. All files are still locked to a grid and the icons are uniform in size. Its predecessor, Konqueror managed to mix icons of varying sizes with larger icons for media that could be previewed as a thumbnail.

Dolphin. The way it handles previews still hasn’t won me over.

I wonder if I’m the only long-term KDE user who hasn’t delved into what task orientated workspaces have to offer? For one thing, I want to be sure that it all works flawlessly before digging in. Perhaps I’m just getting old.

Conclusion

On the surface, KDE4.7 might seem like a minor upgrade, however, a lot of work has been carried out improve the frameworks such as Phonon, NEPOMUK and Anakondi. This release leverages the power of those frameworks to take KDE4 closer to what it was always intended to be, a closely integrated set of applications and services tied together with a user interface that it is easy to use. What KDE4 represents won’t, therefore, please all Linux users or even all desktop Linux users.

Having overcome the difficult birth of the initial release, KDE4 is now a powerful and mature desktop. In the future, in some respects, it will pull further away from what traditionalist Linux users expect from a desktop experience, and on the other hand, KDE4 will soon begin to offer integrated approaches and ways of working that make it stand out against all of the other desktops that are available.

application is currently in use by KDE. A recent renaming by your
GNOME control center developers to this name creates a naming
conflict. This naming conflict will cause severe problems for users as
a result. It will also cause problems for those members of the KDE
Community supporting the usage of KDE applications on GNOME, as it
will not be possible to adjust the settings used by KDE applications.

 This will be because they will both appear, leading to GNOME
packagers stupidly patching the system to not show the KDE System
Settings under GNOME.

As KDE occupied this name first, it is ours as a result, and I will
NOT be relinquishing it to satisfy your personal (selfish) desires,
which will cause numerous problems for users on both sides.
System Settings cannot just be shown on KDE, as the application is
used to configure multiple settings shared between KDE applications
such as Localisation (language, region, currency, calendar), Style,
Colours, Fonts among others.

As KDE System Settings maintainer, I request that you immediately
rename it once again to another name which is not in conflict.

You can compare the Gtk C equivalent example code in this Getting Started Gtk tutorial. I could spend lots of space explaining what it is all about, but anyone familiar with Qt programming ought to be able to understand the code without any explanation – that is the clever thing in fact!

This demonstrates that an auto-generated binding for GObject libraries described by GObject Introspection .gir files can seamlessly inter-operate with Qt libraries. And it looks much the same as a native Qt library to a Qt programmer.

Normally a language binding for Gtk that allows you to write an app to show a hello world button is a fine thing. But those normal language bindings don’t mean that you have united two of the major Linux desktop communities, they just mean that you can write Gtk programs in the language of your choice. So to me, this latest binding is different in kind; it is an opportunity to integrate both libraries and communities, and it isn’t limited to being able to program Gtk in your latest nifty language.

I’m going to the GObject Introspection Hackfest in Berlin, which should allow us to nail down the technical details and get close to bringing the Smoke Gobject bindings up to production quality. It will also be about the social side of linking the two communities in conjunction with the technical discussions.

The Smoke GObject apis are described with QMetaObjects, and that means that the apis will ‘just work’ with QML. I am looking forward to trying out Clutter programming in QML soon, as I believe that should be possible. That shows that these bindings are not just about C++ programming, but languages like QML and QtScript that are driven by QMetaObject introspection too.

2. Improvisasi KWin yang Luar Biasa

KWin sebagai Window Manager dari KDE telah menambahkan fitur yang mendukung Window Tiling, mirip solusi yang dimiliki oleh Ion Window Manager. Dengan fitur ini pengguna dapat mengubah window-window baru yang ada menjadi bersebelahan, diatas, dibawah window pada layar tersebut, menempatkan ulang, maupun mengubah ukurannya.

Fitur lain yang mungkin luput dari pemberitaan banyak pihak tentang KWin pada KDE 4.5 adalah adanya efek blur pada efek komposit desktop milik KDE. Fitur ini akan membuat suatu bagian dari window menjadi sama sekali transparan ataupun hanya translucent (baik keseluruhan bagian maupun sebagian saja dari window tersebut tergantung theme-nya) menjadi background yang blur/membayang dibelakangnya. Fitur ini sebenarnya pernah dimasukkan pada rilis KDE 4 sebelumnya namun kemudian dihapus karena banyak bug yang terdeteksi. Fitur luar biasa ini sayangya tak bisa dinikmati disemua kartu grafis dengan benar, mungkin inilah sebabnya fitur ini tak banyak digaungkan.

Improvisasi lain yang cukup penting ada di engine theme Aurorae adalah dukungan sistem tabbed window yang dikenalkan pertama kali pada theme Oxygen di KDE 4.4. Theme Aurorae sendiri akan diintegrasikan kepada pilihan menu berikut dekorasi window lainnya ke menu lain. Section Window Decorations pada System Settings KDE 4.5 juga dipindah ke section baru “Workspace Appereance” yang memasukkan bagian Desktop Theme dan Splash Screen setting.

3. Dukungan Webkit untuk Konqueror

Konqueror akan tetap dijadikan browser default di KDE 4.5. Pada versi terbaru di KDE 4.5 nanti, Konqueror akan ada K-Part untuk Webkit yang akan diintegrasikan ke fitur standar Konqueror seperti ad-blocking, penyimpanan password, plugin dan lainnya. Memang engine rendering dari Konqueror sendiri masih akan tetap memakai KHTML (yang sebenarnya juga turunan dari WebKit) namun pengguna dapat menambahkan opsi untuk memasang kpart-webkit dari masing-masing repo Linux mereka. Sebagai informasi, Webkit kini tak hanya digunakan oleh browser Safari milik Apple, browser iPhone/iPad tapi juga Google Chrome/Chromium.

4. Fitur baru Plasma KDE

Plasma sebagai desktop shell KDE juga ditambahi beberapa fitur baru yang sudah bisa dinikmati pada KDE SC 4.5. Beberapa diantaranya seperti tombol Preview pada modus Folderview.

KDE juga menambahkan banyak fitur dan perbaikan pada aplikasi-aplikasi penyertanya, KDE Games, admin tool dan aplikasi lain. KDE 4.5 akan dirilis untuk berbagai OS, antara lain Linux, FreeBSD/Unix, Windows dan Mac OSX. Kebanyakan distribusi linux sudah menambahkan update file binari langsung pada repositori masing-masing (tunggu di Mandriva, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Fedora dan lainnya). Saat ini KPrayertime untuk Mandriva memang masih belum tersedia dalam versi RPM. Untuk itulah kita harus mengkompilasinya secara manual (i like compiling!). Berikut adalah cara untuk menginstalasinya.

1. Download source KPrayertime dari kprayertime.sf.net (via Sourceforge.net, pilih Download)
2. Ekstrak file kprayertime-xxx.src.tar.gz,
3. Jalankan Konsole/Terminal dan masuk sebagai root (su).
4. Install kdelibs4-devel dan kdelibs4-core sebagai pustaka wajib untuk mengkompilasi dan menginstall widget ini,

urpmi kdelibs4-devel kdelibs4-core

kira-kira dibutuhkan sekita 30an MB dan 150MB free space disk.
5. masuk ke direktori src hasil ekstrak kprayertime-xxx.src.tar.gz, misalnya (pada desktop saya) ada di /home/emka/tmp/src
6. buat direktori build dengan perintah mkdir build
7. salin file make_makefile ke direktori build, dengan perintah cp make_makefile build
8. masuk ke direktori build dengan perintah cd build
9. jalankan file make_makefile dengan ./make_makefile, tunggu sampai proses kompilasi selesai,
10. jalankan perintah make untuk membuat aplikasi ini,
11. jalankan perintah make install untuk menginstall ke sistem anda.

Mencantumkan Widget KPrayertime di Desktop

1. Klik kanan pada area bebas desktop anda, pilih menu Unlock Widgets dan pilih lagi menu Add Widgets,
2. Setelah form Widget KDE muncul, fokus ke pada kotak search widget dan ketikkan kprayertime. harusnya, KPrayertime telah terinstall dan terlihat pada hasil pencarian. Klik ganda icon tersebut sehingga widget ini ditambahkan ke desktop anda,
3. Setelah widget anda muncul, silakan atur koordinat longitude (bujur) dan latitude (lintang) dari Kota anda, algoritma Hisab (University of Islamic Science, Karachi Syafii untuk Hisab yang biasa dipakai di Indonesia/NU).

Several weeks ago, I ended a comparison of the KDE 4 and 3 desktops by saying “Unless a project takes over KDE 3 development, sooner or later it may become unusable with the latest generation of computers.” What I had missed — free software being a large place where events move at near-light speeds — was that a project had already taken over KDE 3 development. It’s called Trinity KDE, and is organized by Timothy Pearson, who has been releasing Kubuntu releases that use KDE 3.5 for some time. According to Facebook rumor, he has been planning to revive KDE 3 for some time.

I had hoped to interview Pearson about his rationale and motives, but an expensive server crash has kept him too busy to talk, although I still hope to talk to him in the next few days.

Meanwhile, you can easily fill in the blanks about why the project is being enthusiastically received. Although the KDE 4 series has become more usable with every point release, there are still those who condemn it as too bloated, complicated, or resource-hungry. Others suggest that KDE 4 has fewer features, although that is less true with every release, and is sometimes an impression due to a renaming or rearranging of features. Still others, I suspect, are simply nostalgic for a desktop that they used for years.

The truth is, the KDE 4 series has never entirely recovered from the disastrous KDE 4.0 release — no matter whose fault that was. Core KDE developers like Aaron Seigo can now make wry jokes about that events they found personally disheartening, but others have never recovered from the gap between expectations and reality with KDE 4.0.

What we don’t know, of course, is how many would support a revived KDE 3, or whether those who disdain KDE 4 are a sizable minority or even a majority, or simply very loud. But, with Trinity KDE, we are about to find out — and witness, as well, just how complicated bringing a mostly dead desktop back to life can actually be. read more
