This new release features enhancements in the mail, network and password policies modules.

The mail module features a more complete solution for aliases management. Aliases can be populated with LDAP users and/or external mail addresses.

The network module provide a new DNS zone record editor as well as a new interface for configuring DHCP failover.

With the password policies module you are now able to create multiple policies (password length, complexity, minimum/maximum age etc…) and apply them to users.

The MDS packages are available for Mandriva Enterprise Server, Mandriva Desktop, Debian, Redhat (and more) with a user interface in the following languages: English, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German and Spanish.

Changes in politics of platform and distro creation

Mandriva Desktop 2011 has prepared by the new politic of creation and will use the new release cycle: 1 new distro in year, 1.5 years of support. Based on this platform Mandriva Desktop 2011 LTS* will be prepared by the end of the 2011 year with the 3 years of support.

* Long Time Support

Supporting of Desktop Environments

GNOME, Xfce and other Desktop Environments (DE) and Window Managers (WM) are no longer included in the official Mandriva packages. Contribution packages from the Mandriva community are available for these desktop environments however. Starting from Mandriva Desktop 2011 only KDE Plasma Desktop is officially supported. If you need Mandriva with another DE or WM you can use unofficial packages or distributions prepared by community members (which are described below). This concentration of our efforts allowed us to make Mandriva Desktop the best KDE-based distro in the free software industry. Just try and you will see it by yourself!

Hybrid iso image

Mandriva Desktop 2011 has been builded by the new technology, which allows to us prepare hybrid iso-images. You can use them in 4 different variants:

• as installation image;
• as live-DVD;
• as installation image for flash drives;
• as live-flash image.

ISO Image Changes

“One goal – one application” – that is the new philosophy of Mandriva Desktop 2011. From one hand, it allows give to you all necessary applications to work, from other hand – reduce the iso-image size. All applications is thoroughly chosen and have been tested by Mandriva developers. Thus, you can be sure that you’re using first-class applications. But, if you need to install another application you always can do it. Just run the package manager – you will see a lot of interesting programs in our repositories.

Mandriva Installer

In the Mandiva Desktop 2011 we used a new installer. It allows you to install the operating system on your computer directly from the live mode. Installation process has been completely revised and had become more clear and simple. Despite the fact that we aimed to create Mandriva installer as simple as possible it has enough features for installing in different variants and on different system configurations.

New graphics theme

The “Galaxy” theme which was used in Mandriva before is replaced with ROSA theme pack. ROSA theme pack – it is fully integrated theme. It has themes for all components of distro:

• theme for the grub
• theme for the plymouth
• theme for the KDM
• theme for the KDE Splash
• theme for the window managers (KWin, Metacity)
• theme for the GTK/QT
• original icon pack
• some new wallpapers

Thanks to unified theme for the GTK/QT, applications that uses this toolkits looks the same. It was a good tradition for Mandriva before and we planning to continue it. You can use any application for KDE/GNOME or even Xfce or LXDE and it will be look like native KDE application. Also, for developers who want to create applications for Mandriva/ROSA we prepared the “Style Guide” (PDF).

Main Applications

KDM

KDE display manager has been considerably redesigned. Currently its more clear, simple and has a great look. Thanks to adding keyboard layout indicator and the CapsLock key indicator you will make mistakes rarely when you typing your password. Also you can use KDM only from a keyboard – just type Tab to change the user account. Keyboard focus always in the password field. Especially for the Mandriva Desktop 2011, ROSA Laboratory prepared several superb avatars. Of course, you can use the photo of yourself. Size of each image 225×225 pixels, so you can use photos in good quality. For changing default avatar open KDE System Settings -> Account details -> Password & User Account.

Dolphin

The Dolphin file manager has been considerably redeveloped by ROSA Lab developers. It became more simple and easy to use. Changes towards the “standard” Dolphin:

• the main toolbar was considerably simplified;
• by default is used the new menu;
• changed popup menu which appears by clicking by the right button of mouse, it became more simple;
• changed behavior of function “Create symlink” . Now, you do not need to type name for the symlink, by default it will be created with the name “Symlink to [your_file_or_folder]“;
• structure of information message in the statusbar is changed. It became more clear.

Mozilla Firefox

As default internet browser Mandriva uses Mozilla Firefox 5.0.1. It was greatly improved since version 3.5 that is used in Mandriva 2010.2. New look, new features and, of course, it has great speed and security. Main new features:

• “Do not track” options for Android, better visibility in Preferences of desktop version
• CSS animation support, which helps developers build more dynamic websites
• Better support for JavaScript and Canvas
• Updated support for MathML, HTML 5, XHR, and SMIL.

Mozilla Thunderbird

Default mail client in the Mandriva Desktop 2011 is the Mozilla Thunderbird 5.0. It has many improvements over KMail which is used in Mandriva 2010.2. Many superb features of Mozilla Thunderbird can be extremely enlarged by the powerful plugin system. Thunderbird aims to be a simple e-mail, newsgroup and news feed client. Following to a new usability standards it uses tabs for organization of the graphic interface, wizards for setting up user accounts, “Smart” folders, plugins and many many more. Also Thunderbird supports theming system, thus you can easily change the look of it. You can find many beautiful graphics themes for the Thunderbird on the Mozilla site.

LibreOffice

OpenOffice has been changed to LibreOffice in Mandriva Desktop 2011. LibreOffice is a fork from OpenOffice, currently developed by an independent team. Mandriva 2011 comes with LibreOffice 3.4.2. Compared to LibreOffice 3.2 in Mandriva 2010.2 it has many new features and improvements, which can make your work easier. LibreOffice 3.4.2 offers several new features for Calc, with faster performances and an improved compatibility with Excel spreadsheets, and Pivot Table – the new name of DataPilot – with support for unlimited numbers of fields and named range as data source. The user interface of Writer, Impress and Draw has been improved with many new features, and several cosmetic changes have been applied, with a better text rendering engine and an improved GTK+ theme integration.

Shotwell

DigiKam was replaced with Shotwell in Mandriva 2011. Shotwell is a new standard for the photo management in free software. Being one of such products like iPhoto it gives to user the most powerful experience. It lets you import photos from disk or camera, organize them in various ways, view them in full-window or fullscreen mode, and export them to share with others and much more.

PiTiVi video editor

As default video editor in Mandriva used PiTiVi. PiTiVi is a simple video editor. It has efficient and intuitive user interface and is carefully designed to suit both the newcomer and the professional. While it has a simple interface PiTiVi has enough features for your creativity:

• Unlimited video/audio track layers
• Full undo/redo history
• General clip manipulation
• Trimming, splitting/cutting
• Snapping
• Scrubbing
• Linking/grouping of clips
• Video effects
• Audio effects

• And many many more.

However, if you are a professional and you need more features for your work, you can always install Kdenlive from repositories.

Clementine

Amarok was replaced with Clementine. Clementine is inspired by Amarok version 1.4. Its much lighter and stable than Amarok. In spite of ease, it has many functions:

• Search and play your local music library.
• Listen to internet radio from Last.fm, SomaFM, Magnatune, Jamendo и Icecast.
• Create smart playlists and dynamic playlists.
• Tabbed playlists, import and export M3U, XSPF, PLS and ASX.
• CUE sheet support.
• Lyrics and artist biographies and photos.
• Transcode music into MP3, Ogg Vorbis, Ogg Speex, FLAC or AAC.
• Edit tags on MP3 and OGG files, organize your music.
• Copy your files directly to your pendrive/mobile…
• Queue manager.

And many more.

Mandriva Package Manager

Mandriva Package Manager (MPM) is a new package manager for Mandriva. Currently it is under heavy development and is not included in the distribution by default, but you can install it from repository. Please, help us to test MPM. After some period of testing we will include it into Mandriva by default (approximately into Mandriva 2011 LTS).

Currently is implemented:

• a client-server architecture: backend is mdvpkg, frontend – MPM;
• installing/removing packages;
• categorization of applications by repository;
• possibility to work under nonprivileged user account with authorization when it necessary to install package;

ROSA’s Stuff

SimpleWelcome

SimpleWelcome is the completely new kickoff menu which is used in Mandriva 2011 instead of Kickoff. Compared to Kickoff, SimpleWelcome has many benefits:

• Simplicity;
• Clearness;
• Good look;
• Tolerance for the newbies.

Features:

• possibility to launch any graphic application in system;
• quick access to the recently used applications;
• quick access to the ‘Places’ which you can organize in the Dolphin file manager;
• search by names of applications and names of recently used documents;
• possibility to create an icon on the RocketBar by drag&drop;
• possibility to use it only via keyboard (launch by ALT+F1, tabs switching by CTR+TAB, navigation via arrows).

While it has many features, you do not need to learn how to work with the SimpleWelcome. SimpleWelcome is a very simple application – like its name.

TimeFrame

   
TimeFrame is a new utility for Nepomuk. It allows you not to think in which folder you saved your photography, video or documents. You need only a date. If you know the date you will find everything. Information in TimeFrame is represented in “cloud” form, thus you can easily find what you need. Features:

• support of jpg and png files;
• support of mp4, flv, wmv, mpeg, mkv, ogg video files;
• support of .odt, .doc, .docx and pdf documents;
• thumbnails support.

StackFolder

StackFolder — it is a new applet for plasma desktop developed by ROSA Laboratory. It allows to organize fast access to often usable folders. It very simple to use StackFolder. Just drag and drop folder you want to use on RocketBar (or into the desktop). Features:

• possibility to use any folder as StackFolder by drag and drop operation from Dolphin;
• thumbnails for photo and video files;
• possibility to open file in the associated application;
• possibility to open folder in which you are.

RocketBar

RocketBar is a next step (a fork of the standard KDE panel) in the KDE panel development. It has many new superb features:

• A ‘program oriented’ interface. RocketBar is divided in 3 zones. If you add an icon to the left zone it will not appear on the central zone while the application is running. If you run an application, using an icon that you don’t have in the left zone, it will appear in the central zone.
• Possibility to increase panel height as you wish. No more limitation in panel size.
• Complete compositing effects support. If you will apply compositing effects in the KDE Control Center, panel will change its look (thanks to ROSA Plasma Theme).
• Possibility to use “standard” plasmoids (Rocket Bar has backward compatibility with “standard” KDE panel plasmoids).

MandrivaSync

MandrivaSync is the cloud service from Mandriva. Like Ubuntu One, Apple iCloud and Dropbox it allows the user to store its data on the Mandriva’s servers. Then, the user can get access to its data from any device that have MandrivaSync Client or access to the internet. Main features:

• 2 Gb of free space for the any MandrivaSync user.
• Possibility to get access to the data from the any device with MandrivaSync Client (currently only in Mandriva Desktop 2011) or through web-browser.
• Personal room.
• Possibility to specify an object for the synchronization and set auto-synchronization time.

Please note!
Currently service is in beta version only. We still not recommend to use it for the everyday work. Follow the news!

Sphere

Mandriva Sphere is the client for technical support. It allows the user to address directly to the technical support on several languages. For now it’s available in two languages:

• English
• Russian.

Language is chosen automatically based on system locale settings. It is planned to add main European languages support in future releases.

Users may use client in two modes:

• anonymous (ticket tracking is based on provided email address)
• authorized with dedicated support account.

• during system upgrade urpmi is not replace sysvinit with systemd and its dependencies. System still uses sysvinit for booting.

Solution: set up packages of systemd and systemd-sysvinit via urpmi (or drakrpm)

• Old network applet is used instead of NetworkManager.

Solution (if you want to use NetworkManager):

• • set up plasma-applet-networkmanagement package
  • add a line NM_CONTROLLED=yes into the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-<name_of_interface> (ifcfg-eth0, for example). It should be done for all interfaces, that are given under control of NetworkManager.

The same can be done via graphical tools:

• • • run «Configure Your Computer», select «Network & Internet», then — network adjustment module («Network Center»):

• • • Push the button «Configure» for choosen network interface and set an index against «Allow interface to be controlled by NetworkManager»

• • add NetworkManager to autorun by command:

[root@localhost ~]# systemctl enable networkmanager.service.

For notebooks also it’s better to turn off standard modules of network control via systemd (it can slightly speed up system boot):

[root@localhost ~]# systemctl disable network.service && systemctl disable network-up.service

Or via graphical tools:

• • • In «Configure Your Computer» on bookmark «System» choose «Manage system services by enabling or disabling them» module

• • • Select an index against «On boot» against «networkmanager» and (optionally) remove it from «network» and «network-up»

• • • Complete installation of all the necessary to networkmanager modules for interaction with VPN, PPTP etc.
    • Add widget «Network Management» to panel via KDE standard dialog:

• • to configure hostname (when using systemd) put a necessary name in the file /etc/hostname:

myprettynewhostname

• • remove package drakx-net-applet.

• Packages rosa-icons, rosa-elementary-theme, qgtklstylealt will not be installed during system upgrade. Solution — install these packages and customize desktop via KDE module «System Settings».

Before do something you MUST carefully read Mandriva 2011 Release Notes[1], that contains a bunch of useful information about features of new Mandriva. A careful Release Notes reading can save you from many possible problems :).

Next, make sure you have enough free space on your hard drive. All packages during upgrade process will be downloaded to the directory /var/cache/urpmi. The total amount of downloaded packages depends on the amount of installed software on your system, and urpmi will show this before downloading packages. Normally, this value is 4 to 7 GB. If your /var filesystem have not enough disk space don’t care about it. In urpmi, you can specify an alternative path for downloading packages (see below).

How to Upgrading Mandriva 2010 to Mandriva 2011

The first thing to do – remove the old repositories from your currently running system. You can do it with the command below:

[root@localhost ~]# urpmi.removemedia -a

Then add to the urpmi repository information for the release to which we want to update (in an example below there is a system updated from Russian Yandex mirror – you can choose your own favorite and nearest to you). So, the command for 32-bit systems:

[root@localhost ~]# urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist http://mirror.yandex.ru/mandriva/official/2011/i586

And for 64-bit systems:

[root@localhost ~]# urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist http://mirror.yandex.ru/mandriva/official/2011/x86_64/

This command will add all the needed repositories. Next command magically upgrade your system to a new release:

[root@localhost ~]# urpmi --wget --download-all --auto-update

Option –wget tell urpmi to use wget to download packages. By default, urpmi uses aria2 that is not always works correctly.

When you use –download-all option urpmi will download all the packages first and then begins to install all of them. It is strongly recommended option for migration to a new release with urpmi. It is used to provide reliable update, you need to download and update a lot of packages. If you do not use this option and during update process you face Internet connection problems, you will get a very bad situation when only part of system will be updated, that will result in problems with correct system working.

If you wish only to download updates and not install them (for example, to upgrade system later), you need to add the option –no-install.

When you run the update process, the first thing that will make urpmi, is updating itself with all the dependencies and the package management stack (perl-related packages and a new version of rpm). In Mandriva 2011 version system has migrated to the rpm5 package management utility. After installation of new package management tools, special scripts will start that automagically convert your rpm database to the new format.

If all went well – urpmi restarts itself and prompts you to upgrade the rest of the packages. It will show you a series of questions for packages upgrades. For example, it would be the name of the package with the latest kernel version, variants of Java-machine (OpenJDK or Sun Java) etc. urpmi also displays information about system packages that will be removed (it’s okay during upgrade from one distro release to another). If you agree with urpmi and continue to upgrade, you will see a list of packages that need updating, the total number and the amount of disk space that would be necessary for them to download. You should once again make sure that you have this amount of free disk space in /var/cache/urpmi. If you don’t have enough disk space in the /var filesystem, you can use any other filesystem to store the downloaded packages. This can be done using the following command:

[root@localhost ~]# urpmi --wget --auto-update --download-all  /path/to/download/folder

The latter operation (downloading packages and their subsequent installation) will take a long time, so only cross your fingers, pray your God for good luck and wait, wait, wait …

Upon completion this very long process you must restart the system, and if all of this goes well – you will see K Display Manager screen with a new design. Select your account, type your password and log into your new updated system. Congratulations! You have upgraded to Mandriva 2011!

These images will based on the .39 kernel, one of them uses LXDE for window manager and can successfully start and work on old computers, second based on KDE. EduMandriva uses the same code base and the main difference is that programms for education are included by default.

Mandriva announces the immediate availability of a new release of the Mandriva Directory Server (MDS), an easy to use, powerful and secure solution for managing identities, directory services and network services within the enterprise.

This release features in particular the following enhancements:
- the mail module now supports the management of Zarafa accounts;
- the Samba module features extended fine-grained access control list management on Samba shares, and advanced configuration of the Samba accounts;
- the network module supports new DHCP options.

In addition, the MDS build system has been migrated to autotools, which eases manual install and packaging. The MDS packages are available for Mandriva Enterprise Server, Mandriva Desktop, Debian, Redhat (and more) with a user interface in the following languages: English, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German and Spanish.

This new version of MDS is a step forward in simplifying the administration of IT systems and in reducing the related costs while increasing the reliability, the security and the evolutivity of the managed services. Combined with Mandriva Enterprise Server and with Pulse2, it provides a powerful stack for managing the IT assets of enterprises of all sizes. The MDS is interoperable with MS Windows, Linux and Mac systems and it provides a rich and documented API for a smooth integration into existing systems.

Yesterday we went back to work on properly configured environment and as we promised, today Mandriva & ROSA team proudly announce that Mandriva 2011 RC2 is available for download.

In this release candidate we fixed more than 300 bugs and added or changed about 700 packages.

If you need more detailed information, OK, here are main changes since RC1:
- We added virtualbox guest additions by default. Now testing in VirtualBox gives more pleasure than ever.
- Minor fixes in programs for configuring pptp/vpn/wi-fi. Lets try to connect from outside!
- More network cards from Atheros&Intel are supported now.
- Restored some old and added some new epson/hp/lexmark printer drivers.
- Now USB 3G are supported much better. Some of us are working now without wires, so why you can’t?
- We are working hard to improve KDM and Dolphin. Now they work much better.
- Also, our hands added big chunk of code to SimpleWelcome, TimeFrame and RocketBar.
- Improver, Sphere and Sync work like a charm. OK, almost like a charm, but they work!
- ATI and NVidia proprietary drivers have been removed from the installation image. They don’t want to work properly with coool graphics effects. Anyway, you can install these drivers from the repository.
- Made final freeze of 2011 platform in build system. This news is for maintainers only. Thanks for good work, guys!
- We started working on Mandriva 2011 Long Term Support release. Currently we plan to release LTS version by the end of the year. Seriously!
- We started transferring some packages from PLF repository to the «main». Less actions in post install time are better, aren’t they?

Enough? We hope that not! Ok, the visual improvements are coming:
- We added new cursor theme. Now you can point to something so easily …
- We added new icons. Your eyes says thanks for this. We promise not to give up to add new icons in future.
- Also we added new wallpapers. Everybody can take some relax.

Please help us to make Mandriva 2011 better. No more release candidates:
next step is final release!

But because this is just release candidate, here is list of known bugs:
- It takes long start for live-mode
- You can see error message on impossibility to find file user-places.xbel
- Installer shows an error on reading data on flash at installation from it
- Some errors in testing network settings in the installer
- Non-optimal settings for the fonts and the Dolphin file manager
- ROSA Cursors are not used by default
- Graphics effects are turned off by default
- We miss  kernel options for clean start
- Nepomuk&psync status is under heavy development, so some errors exist
- Low volume by default, because some of us like coding at night
- Flash plugin in x64 mode consumes too much memory
- There are issues with some USB webcams

We fix them all as soon as possible. Try to update your RC2 copy on next week!
Again, no more release candidates: next step is final release!

Plug the USB thumbdrive and check the partition drive position by using fdisk command on console. Then write out the ISO to USB by this command (do it as root!):

dd if=/path/mandriva-iso-name.iso of=/dev/sdx

Where sdx is a USB Flash Stick, works again from RC1 and 2011 RC1 from a USB Stick goes really very fast.

Dolphin became an open-source project on July 13, 2008 when the developers released the source code publicly on an SVN repository on Google Code under the GPLv2. At this point, the emulator even had basic Wii emulation implemented. Since its open sourcing, various developers were attracted and development on the emulator has continued since, with regular releases of SVN builds, unlike before, when it was closed-source.[4] These preview builds, unofficial SVN builds, were released with their revision number (e.g., RXXXX) rather than version numbers (e.g., 1.03). As with previous builds, differences between consecutive builds are typically minor.

Dolphin’s Wii emulation reached a milestone in February 2009 when it made a breakthrough, managing to successfully boot and run the official Wii System Menu v1.0.[6] By now, Dolphin can boot all versions of the Wii OS.[citation needed] There is, however, no full support for Wii channels, except for the disc channel.

By April 2009, most commercial games, Gamecube and Wii alike, could be fully played albeit with a few minor problems and errors, with a large number of games running perfectly. Many changes to the emulator improved speed for both x86 and x64 users so dramatically that users were achieving full or higher speeds than the Gamecube and Wii itself. Sound had dramatically improved. Graphics near consistent except for a few minor problems.

By late October 2009, numerous new useful features were incorporated into the emulator such as automatic frame-skipping, which increased the performance of the emulator as well as increased stability of the emulator overall. Also improved was the NetPlay feature of the emulator, which allowed players to play multiplayer Gamecube and Wii games online with friends, as long as the game doesn’t require a WiiMote. In order to make it more user-friendly, Dolphin’s GUI was reworked. The DirectX plugin received huge developments and is now faster than the previously used OpenGL graphics plug-in.

By the end of November 2010, the developers fixed most of the sound issues (such as crackling), added compatibility with even more games, and increased the overall emulation speed and accuracy.

The development builds of Dolphin may have new enhancements, fixes, and experimental features which will eventually be in an official release. Dolphin’s team is asking the community for suggestions for new and more useful features they want in Dolphin.[10] Current features include:
